Hidden Gems: Guide to Buffalo River Swim Spots

swim spots on buffalo river

Hey travel besties! In this post we’re looking at swim spots in one of the most stunning places in the state, The Buffalo National River. But before you dive in….actually don’t dive in, just walk carefully in. Swimming is allowed, but take extreme caution. Diving or jumping from bluffs is dangerous due to submerged rocks, and the bluffs themselves can be crumbly and slick. So keep that in mind when visiting these places. Now that we’ve got the safety talk out of the way, let’s take a leisurely stroll into the best places to take a dip in this iconic Arkansas river.

1. Ponca Low-Water Bridge

Ponca Low-Water Bridge

Just off Arkansas Highway 43, the swimming hole at the Ponca Low-Water Bridge is a local favorite for a reason. The deep pools are ideal for swimming, and the concrete bridge offers an easy entry point to the water. Some folks snorkel here to get a closer look at the native fish and aquatic plants. Bordering the historic Boxley Valley, this area is also known for its elk sightings. It’s not uncommon to see these majestic animals grazing nearby or even sipping from the river.

2. Steel Creek

Steel Creek Campground

Located just over a mile downstream from Ponca, Steel Creek might just be one of the most scenic spots on the Buffalo. Towering bluffs surround the access point, and there are multiple swimming options depending on which direction you head. On the left, behind the campground treeline, you’ll find deep, cool pools beneath Roark Bluff. On the right, near the boat launch, a tributary from Steel Creek flows into the river and keeps the water refreshingly cold. Between the views, the variety, and the cold clear water, this one should definitely be on your list.

3. Kyles Landing

Hasty Public Access

If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, Kyles Landing offers a rugged and scenic escape. Getting there requires navigating Newton County Road 2300 off Highway 74—a steep gravel road that can be rough, especially after rain. High-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended, but those who make the trip are rewarded with access to Castle Bluff, also called “Mud Cave Hole.” This swimming hole tends to stay deeper even during drier months and is tucked away from the main campground, offering a little more privacy and a lot of natural beauty.

4. Ozark

Ozark Campground

Just outside of Jasper along Highway 7, the Ozark Access is a quieter, more relaxed place to cool off. Long pools of water stretch out beneath Briar Bluff, a dramatic rock face with a deep alcove that offers shade and serenity. This swimming spot is ideal if you want to beat the crowds and enjoy some peaceful river time. After your swim, head into Jasper and grab a milkshake at the Ozark Cafe—locals swear by it.

5. Woolum Ford

At Woolum, you’ll find a picture-perfect mix of clear waters and stunning bluffs. This spot feels remote and wild, and it’s a great option if you want to spend the whole day swimming, relaxing, or just taking in the views. Whether you’re paddling through or pulling up for a swim, Woolum never disappoints.

Plan Your Buffalo River Swim Day

From peaceful pools beneath towering bluffs to hidden, off-the-beaten-path gems, the Buffalo National River is full of refreshing swim spots. Just be cautious, pack smart, and take your time getting there—half the fun is the journey. Whether you’re in for a quick dip or a full day of floating, the Buffalo is ready when you are.
