Coolest Swim Spots Around Hot Springs + the Ouachita Mountains

Hey travel besties! Whether you’re a local looking to escape the summer heat or a visitor ready to dip into Arkansas’ natural beauty, the Hot Springs and Ouachita Mountains region is packed with swim spots that are as scenic as they are refreshing. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite swim holes, lakeside beaches, and natural pools so you can splash, float, and chill all summer long. Let’s dive in (pun intended)!
1. Walnut Creek at Charlton Recreation Area
Charlton Recreation Area is just west of Hot Springs in Royal, AR and is home to one of Arkansas’ most beloved swimming holes. The pool, created when Walnut Creek was dammed back in 1935, has been cooling off locals for generations. You’ll find shaded picnic spots, crystal-clear water, and history all in one spot! Yes, please.
2. Little Missouri River at Albert Pike
Albert Pike Recreation Area offers a slice of summer heaven along the Little Missouri River. Tucked deep in the Ouachita National Forest, there’s a natural pool perfect for cooling off. And don’t forget to pack a picnic for those post-swim snack attacks. Just be mindful of water conditions, especially after heavy rains.
3. Swimming & Floating the Ouachita River
The Ouachita River winds through the region with plenty of access points for swimming, tubing, kayaking, or just floating the day away. Two standout river spots:
- Whitewater Park in Malvern
Ouachita River Whitewater Park
While swimming is permitted here, it’s worth knowing this park was designed for whitewater enthusiasts. The water can move rapidly during flow times (Saturdays and Sundays during the summer), and the area is often crowded with paddlers, so it’s not always the best spot for a leisurely swim—though some visitors love the energy and challenge. A weekday swim may be more enjoyable for a casual swim if your schedule allows. The park offers restrooms, picnic tables, shade, a short trail, and a boat launch for small fishing boats. Tubing, canoeing, and floating have become secondary activities here, but no shuttle services or rentals are available, so you’ll need to bring your own equipment and transportation.
- Oden Access Point aka Shirley Creek Recreation Site
Located off US 270 near Pencil Bluff (Exit U.S. 270 at Pencil Bluff to State Hwy. 88, turn left on County Road 7991(Shirley Creek Lane) for 1/2 mile), this is a peaceful, lesser-known access point perfect for a more secluded, relaxing dip off the beaten path.
The Ouachita River also flows into three large recreational lakes: Lake Ouachita, Lake Hamilton, and Lake Catherine
4. Lake Ouachita: Beaches & Hidden Gems
Arkansas’ largest lake = endless swim options. Known for its crystal-clear waters and natural beauty, Lake Ouachita has two public swim beaches:
- Sunset Beach at Mountain Harbor Resort
A dreamy wilderness beach tucked just beyond East Cove Park. It’s a true gem for anyone who loves a quiet, natural setting. It’s a carry-in, carry-out beach; bring everything with you and pack it all back out. There are no restrooms, lights, or other built facilities. What you do get is an unspoiled shoreline, two picnic tables tucked into the scenery, and some of the most incredible sunset views over the lake. No cars allowed, walk or ATV in!
- HWY 27 Fishing Village Sandy Beach
A sandy cove on the western end of Lake Ouachita where it flows back into the Ouachita River, this swim area is a favorite for both day visitors and overnight guests. Its location means you’ll have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the water, whether you’re swimming, wading, or just relaxing on the shore. The Fishing Village itself is family-owned and operated, offering a warm, down-home atmosphere that makes you feel like part of the community the moment you arrive. Guests can rent cabins or RV sites, making it easy to stay and play for a weekend (or longer). Just eight miles north of Mount Ida, it’s an easy drive for a spontaneous swim day or a planned getaway. With a laid-back vibe and scenic surroundings, this is one of those classic Arkansas lake spots for a quiet, peaceful, and perfect summer afternoon.
5. Lake Catherine: Waterfall + Beach Combo
Smaller but oh-so-charming, Lake Catherine features a family-friendly swim beach with easy lake access. But the real magic? Hike the Falls Branch Trail (1.7 miles) and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning 10-foot waterfall that fills a natural pool below. Swimming under a waterfall? Of course, that’s a no-brainer.
6. Lake Hamilton at Hill Wheatley Park
Looking for city-side swimming? Head to Hill Wheatley Park on the western shores of Lake Hamilton, on the out-skirts of Hot Springs. This park has it all—grills, docks, picnic tables, walking trails, and a sandy beach with designated swim areas. Perfect for families, friend groups, or a solo sunset dip.
Ready to Make a Splash?
From hidden creeks to lakeside beaches, the Hot Springs and Ouachita Mountains area has a swim spot for every kind of summer adventurer. Pack your floaties, bring the snacks, and definitely don’t forget the sunscreen—your perfect Arkansas summer swim day (or weekend) awaits.
Let’s keep chasing Arkansas together!
