Knoop Park | A Hidden Hillcrest Gem in Little Rock, Arkansas

Hey travel besties!
I hesitated to share about this little hidden gem because after spending a quiet morning walk there, it felt so quaint and so Hillcrest that I almost wanted to let the neighborhood keep it to themself. But I couldn’t keep it a secret any longer. Nestled high above the bustling streets below, Knoop Park is one of those rare spots that manages to feel both tucked away and deeply connected to the heartbeat of Little Rock.
If you decided to go, just remember to keep the neighborly spirit alive. Wave to your fellow walkers, give a good morning nod, pet a pup, and keep spreading that Hillcrest warmth.
Quiet, Elevated Moments

On my recent morning walk through Knoop Park, I arrived to the bustling sounds of Little Rock waking up: a train’s distant choo-choo below, cars zipping down Cantrell Road, and the faint clang of a nearby construction site. Yet, tucked into the hilly streets of Hillcrest, the park felt like a soft exhale. The city hummed under me, but nature reigned around me.
In the center of the park you’ll find the vantage point where you get sweeping views of downtown Little Rock, the shimmering Arkansas River, and even the limestone cliffs of the quarry across the river in Emerald Park. That kind of vantage is rare in a quiet neighborhood setting; urban and natural all at once.

If you take the stairs, head a bit up the hill, and wander to the left near a tucked-away park bench; you’ll find a tucked away view of the Arkansas State Capitol, peeking through the trees. Think of it as a little scavenger hunt for your next visit. It’s a small discovery, but that’s what makes it magical.

Where to park
The entrance can be tricky to find at first. You can park on Ozark Street, or look for the gated Hill Road entrance off N. Martin Street. It might look a bit official since it’s part of the old Waterworks property but don’t worry, you’re allowed to park there. Once inside, locate the trailhead and start exploring. From Ozark Street you can find street parking and walk towards the East to where Ozark Street runs into the Knoop Park trail.

A Quick Look at Its History
Knoop Park spans about 45 acres and is officially classified as a community park by the city of Little Rock. The land was once part of the Little Rock Water Works in 1886 and later became park land as the high-ground neighborhood of Hillcrest developed. The name “Knoop” comes from Werner C. Knoop, a longtime Hillcrest resident, construction company founder, and former mayor of Little Rock whose legacy lives on in this breezy hilltop green space.

Walking through Knoop Park, you’ll sense layers of history: old stone walls, mature trees that have watched the neighborhood evolve, and winding paths that give you a sense of continuity—and calm.
Why It Feels So Special (and Why I Want to Keep It That Way)
There’s a humble charm to Knoop Park that makes you lean in quietly. Trails are paved and easy, benches sit in shaded glades, and every step offers another view or moment of peace. The park’s loop trail is about 1.4 miles long, paved, and quite accessible for strollers or casual walkers. I did leave my stroller at the bottom of the stairs (there isn’t a good access point for strollers or wheelchairs to go up the hill).
At the heart of Knoop Park lies a beautiful sandstone piazza, its paving stones hand-laid by WPA workers in the 1930s. A smaller piazza sits just uphill, embraced by a semi-circular stone wall, also built by WPA hands. Both overlook the city below, offering postcard-worthy views of downtown, the state capitol, and the Arkansas River glimmering in the sunlight.

On pretty days, you might see local artists with easels, painting the sweeping skyline or the glow of the morning mist. Neighborhood volunteers tend to flowerbeds, water fountains (yes, even for pets!), and a lovely butterfly garden that blooms on an east-facing hillside. A reminder of how much care this community puts into its green spaces. If you can, visit on a weekday morning for a quiet, cozy stroll. But don’t overlook the golden hour in the evening; when the sky turns soft and pink and the city lights start to sparkle below.

The historic homes of Hillcrest, the hill slopes, the trees—all conspire to give you a break from the bustle even though you’re in the middle of the city. So here’s the thing, this park still feels tucked away. When I walked through, it felt like the kind of place locals keep as their little secret. That’s exactly why I paused before writing this: I don’t want to bring so much attention that it loses that quiet neighborhood magic.

The Heart of Hillcrest Hospitality
As I wandered down the trail, one thing stood out even more than the views: the friendliness. Everyone I passed said hello or offered a cheerful “good morning.” A few even stopped to pet my dog, share a smile, or strike up a small conversation about the weather or the neighborhood. It felt like stepping into a simpler, friendlier—dare I say, romantic—version of city life; one where community vibrates in every wave and shared moment.
That neighborly spirit is part of what makes Knoop Park feel so special. It’s not just the views; it’s the people who pass you by with a friendly smile and warm salutation.

What to Do & What to Bring
- Morning or Golden Hour strolls: The early light hits just right, the air is crisp, and the city views glow.
- Scenic hunt: Follow the stairs and look left for that hidden bench with a view of the State Capitol.
- Photography: The downtown skyline, river, and fall foliage are stunning from the overlook.
- Enjoy your morning coffee hilltop: Grab a blanket, some coffee from a Hillcrest cafe, and settle on one of the benches. A perfect moment spent between city and nature.
- Family walk or pet outing: The paved loop is stroller-friendly and dog-friendly (on leash), making it a relaxed outing for all. There’s also a cute dog fountain for your pup to have a hydrating sip.

Bring layers for a morning walk, as the hilltop breeze can feel cooler than surrounding streets. I started in a sweatshirt that I ended up taking off after walking a bit. And if you want the best views, walk to the center of the park or sit on an overlook bench and just listen—to the city, the train, the trees, and the breeze.
Knoop Park is one of those places in Little Rock where you can feel the city underneath you and nature wrapping around you at the same time. It’s urban yet serene, historic yet fresh . I love it for its quiet beauty, its neighborly warmth, and for giving me that “hidden gem” feeling we chase for this blog.

So yes, I’m sharing it — but gently. Visit the park, enjoy the view, and if you go, pass on that Hillcrest kindness. Say hello to fellow walkers, stop to pet a pup, or share a smile. Let’s keep that neighborly spirit alive.
Let’s keep Chasing Arkansas together.
